World of Warcraft: $120k reasons to play WoW Arena

Blizzard ramps up 2008 with World of Warcraft tournament and $120,000 on the line.
Blizzard begins its ramp up towards another WoW Arena Tournament for 2008. Currently the prize money is being quoted at $120,000 with $75k being given to the Grand Finals winner. In a change from last year Blizzard will be going with a 3v3 format. This should solidify the three one three format as the premier play style for competitive WoW after WSVG and Dreamhack/ESL both picked this format over the past year.

“Within a structured format comprising two six-week-long qualifying rounds, players will battle on special tournament realms purely dedicated to the competitive format of 3v3 Arena matches,” said Blizzard on its official WoW website, “The characters used on these realms are new level 70s that you create, decked to the brim with PvP armor and weapons.”

The registration for the event hasn’t been opened yet but each account participating will be required to pay $20 to entry the online event culminating in a LAN final which is expected to be at Blizzcon yet again.

Blizzard VP Says No Micro-Transactions for World of Warcraft

Blizzard’s Rob Pardo has criticized micro-transactions in MMOGs, saying the increasingly prevalent payment system is unfair to gamers in subscription-based games like World of Warcraft.

Pardo, the senior vice-president of game design at Blizzard, made the comments during the Q&A session following his GDC address entitled “Blizzard’s Approach to Multiplayer Game Design.” According to a WoW Insider transcript, Pardo was asked if Blizzard had considered implementing micro-transactions in World of Warcraft. “We chose to go with the subscription-based model instead of that approach,” he replied. “We’ve taken the approach that we want players to feel like it’s a level playing field once they’re in WoW.”

“Outside resources don’t play into it – no gold buying, etc. We take a hard line stance against it,” he continued. “What you get out of micro-transactions is kind of the same thing and I think our player base would feel betrayed by it. I think that’s something else you have to decide on up-front instead of implementing it later.”

When it was suggested micro-transactions might make it easier for casual gamers to maintain pace with more serious players, Pardo said, “They aren’t going to be the ones spending the money.”

GDC 08: World of WarCraft on Mobile Phones?

Vollee, a relative newcomer to the field of wireless games, has a disruptive plan to leapfrog anything else established mobile gamemakers are currently working on. With streaming technology, any PC or console title can be played on a mobile phone, and we’ve already seen how the service handles a massively multiplayer online PC game: Second Life.

Vollee’s big idea is reliant on their relationship with publishers. Linden Lab, which produces Second Life, and Activision, which has merged with World of WarCraft developer and publisher Blizzard, have both already announced partnerships with Vollee. Since Second Life proves that PC MMOs can be streamed to mobile phones, the idea of 10 million World of WarCraft users accessing their accounts and controlling their characters remotely starts to seem much more likely.

Vollee works in a similar fashion to online TV and other streaming multimedia. Vollee runs the game off servers on the back end and constantly pipes information to the user’s phones, so the game isn’t actually being rendered on the phone. Your 3G (third generation) phone only has to run Vollee’s 100kb client, and the game will stream continually from their servers. Better make sure you’re not paying by the bit, however, because Vollee’s model only makes sense with an unlimited data-access plan.

The results are stunning. A PC-perfect version of Second Life runs on a phone that could barely handle some of the most elemental mobile games. Vollee also optimizes the controls and user interface for phones, so in Second Life’s case, instead of having pop-up windows for chatting or maps, a tabulated system lets you switch between each screen. It may not have keyboard-and-mouse support, but Vollee tries to make the keypad perform most of the same functions, so moving and flying around in Second Life felt quite natural and looked great to us.

The visual fidelity, while a bit grainy (think YouTube-quality resolution), was still leagues beyond any 3D game capable of being rendered by the phone itself. Even the most advanced 3D phones can’t match the visuals of a current PC or console title, and after playing a streaming PC game on a relatively low-powered phone, it’s hard to imagine how current mobile titles can compete.

Vollee requires a 3G phone, but these are becoming much more common. Adoption rates for 3G phones are pretty high, but many factors determine the purchasing decisions of consumers, and technical specs are rarely one of them (fashion seems to be among consumers’ top priority). With more Vollee partners expected to be announced soon and an open Second Life mobile beta starting in May (sign up at http://vollee.com/secondlife), now is definitely the time to get on board with a 3G phone to catch this potentially massive wave of innovation.

Wrath of the Lich King Beta in June?

WoW.IncGamers is speculating that the World of WarCraft: Wrath of the Lich King beta may begin in June:
These World Wide Invitationals by Blizzard have increased in size since they started some 4 years ago. Honestly, who even knew there was one in 2006 before they shocked everyone last year with StarCraft II in Korea? One change from last year is that they haven’t actually said they will announce anything new and big. That could mean that they just haven’t said anything yet, and some game is on the way (as June is still far away), or things are just as simple as it looks: There are no new games to be announced this time around.

That tasty bullet point; “And more…” is very alluring though! A lot of hints point at Blizzard starting a Wrath of the Lich King Beta (and/or StarCraft II Beta) shortly after WWI, or that they will announce a Beta Date during the event. Meanwhile, we can see that the StarCraft II production is coming along nice as well, and all those Q & A sessions (157 thus far!) with Karune & Xordiah certainly suggests they want to be as proactive as possible with the StarCraft II community.

World of Warcraft Zuluhed the Whacked

Zuluhed the Whacked was a powerful orc shaman, leader of the Dragonmaw clan. They fought in Azeroth during the First and Second Wars. The Dragonmaw was one of the strongest supporters of Blackhand, and after his death, they pledged themselves into the service of the Black Tooth Grin Clan. Its leaders, Rend and Maim, handed Zuluhed the Demon Soul, and ordered him to use it to capture the dragonqueen Alexstrasza. But his shamanistic magics weren’t powerful enough to tap into the artifact, and so Zuluhed used the warlock skills of his warrior Nekros Skullcrusher in order to tame and capture the dragonqueen. This provided a valuable aid to the orcs, as her dragons were used to wreak havoc among the humans. Zuluhed trusted Nekros with the Demon Soul, and commanded the orc operations in the captured Khaz Modan during the Second War. After the Horde was defeated, the Dragonmaw was one of the few clans still standing. While Zuluhed was fighting the human attacks near Dun Algaz, a strike force led by Rhonin attacked Grim Batol and freed the dragonqueen. After the loss of their greatest asset, the clan began to lose ground, and was eventually defeated and captured by the Alliance. Zuluhed currently resides in Outland and serves Illidan.

World of Warcraft Zul’jin

Forest Troll leader, helpful in instrumenting and coordinating attacks against the Alliance on Azeroth during the Second War. His whereabouts are currently unknown, but many trolls wait in anticipation for the day that Zul’jin returns, heralding it as a new beginning for the tribes. He may yet appear in the Burning Crusade, possibly in the new Forest Troll instance of Zul’Aman.

World of Warcraft Ysera

Ysera the Dreamer is one of the five Dragon Aspects that watch over the world of Azeroth. The green dragon is the younger sister to Alexstrasza and empowered by the titan Eonar to be bound to the Emerald Dream in an eternal trance to forever watch over the wilds and the druids in the Emerald Dream. In any form, Ysera is almost always seen with her eyes closed as she is both in the mortal world and the Emerald Dream. It was believed that there is a connection between Ysera and Elune, as it has been said separately that both are the mother of Cenarius. However, it has been released that Ysera and Elune are not the same. While Elune did birth Cenarius, she saw that he was not of her realm and gave him to Ysera, who raised him. Ysera became furious when Archimonde killed Malorne and severely wounded Cenarius.

Ysera rules the Emerald Dream from the “Eye of Ysera,” a golden dome which has no fixed point within the realm appearing wherever Ysera wishes it to. To enter the Emerald Dream unbidden or destroy life there is to earn Ysera’s and her brood’s unending wrath.

World of Warcraft Xi’ri

Not much is currently known about Xi’ri – he is a Naaru and member of the Sha’tar who went to Shadowmoon Valley and fought a successful action against Illidan and gained a foothold in the area. Members of the Aldor and Scryers are sent on a regular basis by A’dal to assist him.

World of Warcraft Lord Xavius

Lord Xavius was a former Night Elf who ascended through the Quel’dorei to be the Counselor to Queen Azshara. Intrigued by the art of magic, he worked his way through the Highborne with such dedication that he gave up his own eyes for magical orbs allowing him to understand his art better. He led the creation of the portal that would allow Sargeras to venture into Kalimdor. He captured Malfurion Stormrage’s spirit form, who later escaped and killed Xavius. His spirit was captured by Sargeras, who tortured him and then resurrected him as the first Satyr, and sent him into the world to fill the ranks of the Legion. Later in the War of the Ancients, Malfurion, in a desperate bid to save Tyrande from the clutches of the Legion, kills Xavius for the second (and more permanent) time by turning him into a tree.

She became very much involved in his quest. Vereesa later married Rhonin. In the War of the Ancients trilogy she is the mother of Rhonin’s children (half elven twins).

Velen, unlike the other two, refused, and was forced to leave their home world Argus with the other uncorrupted Draenei. They found the world of Draenor and settled there. Currently, he resides in the new Draenei city of Exodar.

World of Warcraft Varimathras

Varimathras is likely second in command of The Forsaken. He is a Dreadlord, a race of demons from The Twisting Nether used as commanders for the invasions of the Burning Legion. With the fall of the Legion at the Battle of Mt. Hyjal, he and several of his brothers were abandoned in the Plaguelands at the Ruins of Lordaeron. They had no news of the defeat of the Legion, and continued to rule over the undead stationed there while waiting for further instructions from Archimonde the Defiler. Their fortifications were assaulted during the Undead Civil War by the forces of the Forsaken and their leader Sylvanas Windrunner, and Varimathras was captured by the Dark Lady. Out of cowardice, he swore fealty to her in order to preserve his own life and assisted her in the destruction of the Dreadlords Balnazzar and Detheroc. He personally attacked and was forced to have killed his brother Balnazzar, leader of the Plaguelands’ Legion forces. Since then he has assisted Sylvanas in her rise to power as ruler of the Forsaken, and aids with her from the Undercity. He runs the day to day affairs of the undead faction, monitoring the progress of the Forsaken’s war against the Scourge and the Scarlet Crusade. His position is highly special as he is the only former member of the Burning legion who openly became one of the rulers of the Azeroth faction (Horde). Although he is a powerful leader of the Forsaken, he does not give honor when killed.

Vaelastrasz is a Red Dragon who is also known as Vaelan in human form. Vaelastrasz has sworn to hunt Nefarian until the end of his days. After aiding players in defeating the false orc leader, Rend Blackhand, Vaelastrasz journied to find his nemesis above the Blackrock Spire. He faced Nefarian in his lair, The Blackwing Lair, and was wounded severely during the battle. Nefarian used his own blood in an arcane ritual to corrupt the younger Red Dragon. Nefarian then used Vaelstrasz against the heroes who came to kill him.

Appears in World of Warcraft in the Lower Blackrock Spire, Upper Blackrock Spire and Blackwing Lair instances.

Uther the Lightbringer was the first Paladin of Azeroth and was the mentor of Prince Arthas Menethil until he was betrayed and killed by Arthas during the Third Great War. Uther was the founder of the Knights of the Silver Hand and lived to the age of 64. His dying words to Arthas “I hope that there’s a special place for you in Hell, Arthas”

World of Warcraft Tyranastrasz

Tyranastrasz was the first consort of Alexstrasza.

He was captured and enslaved along with Alexstrasza by the Orcs using the Demon Soul during the Second War. Since the Orcs lost all the consorts but him, he was forced to mate with Alexstrasza in order to produce offspring for the Orcs to attack and harass Alliance forces. Tyranastrasz was an old dragon before he was captured, described as hundreds of years older than Alexstrasza, and the constant strain of his captivity affected him. He was killed by Deathwing just before Alexstrasza was freed by Korialstrasz, Rhonin, Vereesa, and Falstad.

World of Warcraft Turalyon

Turalyon was a paladin who was involved in the human defense during the Second War, alongside Alleria Windrunner and Danath. Before that he was one of the paladins serving alongside Anduin Lothar, and seemingly the sole survivor of the ambush in which Lothar perished. His inability to save the great hero has haunted Turalyon since that day.

A memorial can be seen of him in front of the human city of Stormwind in World of Warcraft. His statue is the largest and most prominent of the five statues at the entrance to Stormwind.
Said to be in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, but has yet to appear in game.
The server Turalyon is named after him.

World of Warcraft Tirion Fordring

Tirion was a Paladin of the Silver Hand who was at one time named the Master of Hearthglen. Unlike many strong-headed warriors of Lordaeron, Tirion did not view Orcs and other creatures as inherently evil and preferred to judge everyone by their actions and not their birthright. When he showed compassion to an exiled orc hermit and consequently saved him from execution, Tirion was ejected from the Silver Hand and, supposedly, had his powers stripped. However, while escaping from Stratholme with the wounded orc, Eitrigg, Tirion found his powerful abilities blessed by the Holy Light had not faded, and he was able to heal Eitrigg’s grievous wounds and save him.

After living in exile for many years, Tirion Fordring’s past caught up with him in the form of his son Taelan who had also been inducted into the Silver Hand, but succumbed to the zealous call of the Scarlet Crusade, becoming its Highlord and donating the Fordring family lands, primarily consisting of Hearthglen, where he is currently stationed. After years of separation, Father and Son were nearly destined to meet but Grand Inquisitor Isillien of the Scarlet Crusade murdered Taelan before the two could reconcile, throwing Tirion into a rage which ended in the death of the High Inquisitor and his guards. The quest series is generally accepted as one of the most touching and well-written in the game, and has led to the popularisation of Tirion.

Today Tirion still lives in isolation in the northwest corner of the Eastern Plaguelands. After the death of Taelan, he swore to take up the mantle held by Uther the Lightbringer and become the Lord of the Silver Hand and lead the Paladin order into the future. He is referenced by several members of Light’s Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands and seems to inspire fear in the ranks of the remaining Scarlet Crusade.

According to the information released at BlizzCon 2007, Tirion Fordring will appear as “Highlord Tirion Fordring” upon the completion of an Alliance quest in the Howling Fjord of Northrend. The title coincides with what he said at the end of the quest chain involving him and his son: “I now take my place as Highlord of the new Order of the Silver Hand.”

World of Warcraft Tichondrius

Foremost of the Nathrezim, who were otherwise known as Dreadlords, he served under Kil’jaeden. He was appointed the task of personally guarding the Lich King. He was a powerful warrior and was extremely loyal to Kil’Jaeden despite his misgivings about the Lich King. When Arthas was turned into a Death Knight, Tichondrius remained his superior until Arthas and Kel’Thuzad broke away entirely from the Burning Legion. He was slain by Illidan Stormrage after Illidan consumed the energies of the skull of Gul’dan.

Thrall is currently the Warchief of the Horde, after taking up the title and armaments of the former Warchief Orgrim Doomhammer after Orgrim fell in battle. Originally raised to be a gladiator and a liaison between humans and the Orcs in the internment camps, Thrall instead releases his captured brethren with the help of Orgrim Doomhammer and Grom Hellscream and the Warsong Clan. He is the son of Durotan, successor to Orgrim Doomhammer whom the capital of Durotar, Orgrimmar is named for. Visionary leader, Farseer, and Warchief of the Orcish Horde, he is credited with founding the nation of Durotar in East Kalimdor and also allying the mighty Tauren by aiding Cairne Bloodhoof in saving his village from Centaur attacks. He wields the Legendary Doomhammer and maintains an uneasy truce/friendship with Jaina Proudmoore who aided him in freeing his friend Grom Hellscream from Mannoroth’s control.

World of Warcraft Teron Gorefiend

Teron Gorefiend was an Orc warlock and member of the Shadow Council until he was killed by Orgrim Doomhammer and later reincarnated in the body of a knight of Azeroth as one of Gul’dan’s Death Knights. Following the defeat of the Horde in the Second War, Gorefiend took control of the surviving Death Knights who had remained on Azeroth (some others had already established on Draenor before the destruction of the Dark Portal). Gorefiend aligned himself with Ner’zhul hoping to use one of his portals to invade a world for the Death Knights alone to conquer. His fate remains unknown, but he was possibly killed (his body destroyed) when an elite group of the Alliance Expedition on Draenor attacked Fortress Shadowmoon.

Teron Gorefiend appears in an elite quest chain in Shadowmoon Valley in Outland. Gorefiend also appears in the Black Temple raid instance as one of the bosses.

A brief video of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (Beta) shows an ephemereal Teron Gorefiend being subdued and banished by dark casters, only to escape them and ride away.

World of Warcraft Terokk

According to legend, Terokk is the god of the arakkoa, a race of bird-men who reside primarily in Terokkar Forest – believed to be named for him. Terokk was once a revered hero of the arakkoa, and is said to have built their capital city of Skettis with his own claws. He ruled the arakkoa of Skettis for hundreds of years, until one day he mysteriously disappeared, leaving only his spear, his mask, and his writings. He is now seen as evil, denounced as a false prophet by a faction of arakkoa renegades led by Rilak the Redeemed. They are of the belief that Terokk’s actions – including the corruption of avians at Veil Lithic and the resurrection of the denizens of Veil Rhaze, destroyed when Auchindoun was annihilated – will damn the arakkoa race for all eternity. Talon King Ikiss, leader of the Sethekk clan that has set up shop in Auchindoun, has declared himself Terokk reborn, and has stolen the Relics of Terokk for his own corruptive use.

An island in Blackwind Lake, set in the center of Skettis, is known as Terokk’s Rest; it is here that adventurers in the service of the Sha’tari Skyguard can summon Terokk himself back into the world, and destroy him once and for all.

Taretha Foxton was a childhood friend of Thrall the Orc Warchief, in the novelization Lord of the Clans. When Thrall was a baby, Taretha’s mother was given the duty of nursing and caring for him until he was old enough to be trained. Taretha looked on him as a little baby brother, and while Thrall was training, Taretha was given the duty of carrying books on strategy and military history to Thrall’s cell. She used the opportunity to converse with him through letters hidden in the pages of the books, and would also give him additional books on subjects such as Art. When Thrall decided to escape from Durnholde, Taretha arranged for a distraction to allow him to escape, and even gathered supplies for him. Taretha died after the man who took her as his mistress, General Aedelas Blackmoore, ordered her execution for helping Thrall, in an attempt to break his will. Thrall, who was instead enraged by her death, avenged Taretha, killing Blackmoore during the siege of Durnholde, and razing the keep to the ground. Taretha’s love and compassion was a powerful influence on the young Warchief, and is often credited with leading him into his friendship with Jaina Proudmoore in the Third War and afterwards.

In World of Warcraft, Horde agents are dispatched from Tarren Mill to assassinate Lord Aliden Perenolde, leader of the Syndicate in Alterac, and regain Taretha’s pendant – a crescent moon on a silver chain – from Perenolde’s mistress, Elysa.

The Bonechewers stayed in Draenor during the First Crossing, but when the Second Crossing was imminent, the Bonechewers were attacked by the Shadow Moon Clan, for one of their captains possessed the Skull of Gul’dan as a trophy. Their camp was obliterated and the skull reclaimed. Soon after, Tagar, along with Fenris of the Thunderlords, decided to sojourn into Azeroth, rising to the challenge and succeeding where their predecessors failed. Ner’zhul refused their suggestions, and their Clans were slaughtered.

World of Warcraft Stalvan Mistmantle

The former teacher of the schoolhouse in Moonbrook, Westfall, Stalvan was enlisted as a private tutor of a wealthy family living near the Eastvale Logging Camp in Elwynn Forest. One of his pupils, a fair-looking young woman, drove him mad with love. When she unexpectedly chose a suitor after all of her “come-ons” to Stalvan, he went mad with jealousy and grief. Saying “that’s just my tutor, old uncle Stalvan” didn’t help things either, as she was only a few years younger than him. He proceeded in murdering her, her young suitor, and many other nobles in his blind rage. He wandered, blind with rage – eventually contracting the plague of undeath. He lives in a shack in northeastern Duskwood. World of Warcraft players can opt to pursue a quest line that results in his death (again).

She is the Prime Mate of Nozdormu the Aspect of Time.

Ten thousand years ago, Saridormi represented Nozdormu at the gathering of dragons in the Chamber of the Aspects for the creation of the Dragon Soul because Nozdormu wasn’t there. She contributed her own and Nozdormu’s essence to the Soul’s spell matrix. Nozdormu’s essence was in an hourglass. Soridormi was betrayed along with the rest of the dragons when Neltharion attempted to use the Dragon Soul to gain control of the Flights, but was saved by the intervention of Korialstrasz.

Saridormi later fought in the final battle against the Burning Legion above the Well of Eternity, again representing the Bronze Dragonflight. She was the mount for Broxigar. She was reunited with Nozdormu.

World of Warcraft Sargeras

Sargeras, a bronze-skinned Vanir Titan, used to be the champion of the Pantheon. Once he was sent to deal with several demonic races. He managed to defeat them and imprison them. But due to the corruption of these demons, he went insane. He released the demons from their prisons, who were quick to ally with the Dark Titan, bowing before his vast power.

Sargeras began invading worlds, becoming the leader and creator of the Burning Legion. His mortal avatar appeared before, and was killed by, the Guardian Aegwynn, but not before possessing her son Medivh. His spirit lay dormant within the young man for many years, corrupting him with subtle manipulations that culminated in the opening of the Dark Portal which brought the Orcs into Azeroth.

Eventually, Medivh was killed and Sargeras’ spirit was exorcised by the mage Khadgar, the Knight Anduin Lothar (trainer of Uther the Lightbringer, founder of the Paladins of the Silver Hand) and the half-Orc Garona. What is left of the Dark Titan is currently in the Twisting Nether, completely incapable of doing anything, due to his lack of a physical form. If he were able to once more make himself physically manifest, he would arguably be the most powerful being in the Warcraft universe.

Sapphiron was later resurrected as a frost wyrm and, under the control of Arthas, helped him clear the entrance of the caverns by killing the guard dwarves. He was left behind together with the other flying undead creeps to guard the entrance because the caverns were too small for flight. He is currently tasked with protecting Kel’Thuzad’s inner chamber within the necropolis Naxxramas, serving as the penultimate boss before the showdown with the lich himself.

A half-orc, half-ogre Beastmaster/Hunter who was instrumental in assisting Thrall and the Horde in defending the fledgling nation Durotar after the fall of the Burning Legion. His lineage is known as the “Mok’nathal”, and he is rumored to be one of the last of them. He travels the land as an “outcast” with his animal companions. In World of Warcraft, he and his bear, Misha, patrol along a road in Desolace between Feralas and The Charred Vale in west-central Kalimdor. Rexxar also appears in Outland at Thunderlord’s Fortress in the Blade’s Edge Mountains. In Outland, Rexxar continues his tale by sharing that he had an argument with his father Leoroxx at the Mok’Nathal Village. The argument leads Rexxar to travel to Azeroth and eventually meet up with the Horde. This implies that Rexxar is an “outcast” and is “lost” in the eyes of his own father, and possibly hints of a reunion between Father and Son.

World of Warcraft Rend and Maim

Rend and Maim were the sons of Blackhand, who continued to lead the Blackrock clan after their father’s demise. They branched off into the Black Tooth Grin clan, wherein each member knocked out one of their own teeth as a show of loyalty and strength. They were at the final battle for the Portal at the end of the Second War. But with Doomhammer defeated and the Alliance troops rallying under Turalyon, they staged a retreat into Blackrock Spire, and holed themselves up within.

This began a war with the current residents – the Dark Iron Dwarves. The war raged for years within the mountain, with little ground gained on either side. Maim eventually died in the course of the war, leaving Rend to proclaim himself Warchief. He was soon visited by Nefarian and his black dragons, and with their help, drove the Dark Iron dwarves back into the depths, leaving the Spire to them. He sits there still, loyal to Nefarian but also building up his own, dark Horde to oppose Thrall. The mountain remains contested between Nefarian’s forces controlling the spires, the Dark Iron Dwarves holding the depths, and the armies of Ragnaros fortified in the Molten Core.

Rend and Maim also appear in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne in Lord of Outland, Chapter Six of the Alliance Campaign. There, they are Blademasters guarding Magtheridon’s Black Citadel, and are slain by the combined forces of Illidan Stormrage, Prince Kael’Thas, Lady Vashj, and the Draenei Akama. The Rend and Maim here have no connection whatsoever with the Rend and Maim described above.

Mograine became weakened by his battle, and open to the betrayal that was to come. Renault picked up Ashbringer and ran it through his father’s heart, forever corrupting the blade and the man wielding it.

Today, Renault is the Commander of the Scarlet Monastery, second only to High Inquisitor Whitemane.

An Archmage of Dalaran who dwelled in the Quel’Thalassian Capital of Silvermoon. When the Undead Scourge laid siege to the city, Arcanister resisted in every way possible. Seeing that the battle was ending and that his comrades were far outnumbered, Arcanister fled with a handful of survivors to Dalaran in order to warn the Kirin Tor. When Arthas and Kel’Thuzad made their inevitable journey to Dalaran, the Mages were more than ready for them. The Mages had constructed a shield-type spell that drained the evil energy of the Undead Scourge and for a time the Undead were unable to attack the city. However, this spell had to be maintained by 3 Archmages, and Arcanister was one of them. Arcanister guarded the Gates of Dalaran and maintained the shield and held off the Scourge for a brief period. However, the Undead used devious tactics to combat the Wizards and humans of Dalaran and Arthas was eventually able to kill the Archmage. The other 2 mages resisted for a period but were also murdered by the teeming Undead Armies. With their deaths came the loss of Dalaran. Arcanister was a prolific and benevolent Mage who is remembered as a hero of the Human Alliance.

World of Warcraft Ner’zhul (Lich King)

Ner’zhul was the mentor of Gul’dan and a powerful Shaman who made a pact with (and was corrupted by) Kil’Jaeden. Due to his failure in establishing a grand invasion of Azeroth, and for opening various portals to other worlds, he was punished by encasing Ner’zhul in the Frozen Throne. He became the Lich King and was ordered to create the Scourge and lead a second invasion into Azeroth. He became too powerful for Kil’Jaeden to control. Arthas traveled to Northrend and shattered the frozen throne, donning the armor of Ner’zhul, and fused with him to become one of the most powerful beings the world has ever known.

World of Warcraft Neltharion (Deathwing)

Neltharion the Earth Warder was one of the Five Dragon Aspects created to defend Kalimdor. After the creation of the Dragon Soul (soon after renamed “Demon Soul”) he betrayed the other Aspects, and became the dragon Deathwing. He is the sworn enemy to Alextrasza, the leader of the Red Dragons and Ysera, the Leader of the Green Dragons. For a while, he became the ally of Ner’zhul and offered his black dragonflight to serve him. He was in command of the Black Dragonflight until he disappeared. The remnants of the Black Dragonflight are lead by his heir, Nefarion.

In Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, Deathwing had armored plates fused to his already strong scales by goblin alchemists, making him even more resistant to damage.

After the Second War, the Dragonmaw Clan is not the same threat they were when they had dragons, but they’re still fierce opponents. The Dragonmaws are now led by Chieftain Nek’rosh, son of Nekros Skullcrusher, who was one of the top liutenants of the Dragonmaws years ago. Nekros used powerful magic to tame the Red Dragons, but when that magic failed him, Nekros was killed by the dragons and his son has vowed revenge against the dragons who slew his father. The dragons were not very happy with their old masters, and fiercely hunted the Dragonmaws. What few remained fled from Grim Batol and into the Mountains east of Whelgar’s Excavation. Now they’ve gained strength, and have an encampment northeast of Menethil. Nek’rosh has built catapults and aims to lay siege to Menethil. And with the fighting in Dun Algaz, they would be effectively blocked from reinforcements.

Nekros Skullcrusher was one of the few Orcish warlocks who were not part of the Shadow Council. Nekros Skullcrusher never cared for his dark, magical calling. He considered himself more a warrior than a wizard, but his duty to his clan, and himself, demanded that he saddle his burden, especially when a human knight deprived him of half a leg. Nekros, being of the Dragonmaw Clan, was commissioned by his chieftain, Zuluhed, to bear the dark artifact known as the Demon Soul, which he would use to capture and contain Alexstrasza, the mighty Dragonqueen. They did just that, and Nekros became her warden in Grim Batol, using the Demon Soul to inflict unimaginable pain on her whenever she did not cooperate. When she chose to starve herself, he shattered an egg before her. Nekros continually abused her, both mentally and physically, especially after the Second War, when she became the only real weapon the Horde had against the Alliance. Her mates, however, were dying, and Nekros would soon have no further means of producing her children. Nekros was tricked by Deathwing into moving Alexstrasza into the open, where she was freed by her lover Korialstrasz, and the first thing she did was dispose of Nekros, burning him to cinders. His son Nek’rosh survived the massacre.

The son of Deathwing the Destroyer (Once known as Neltharion) and brother of Onyxia. Nefarian is a massive Black Dragon of incredible power. This maleficent leviathan dwells within Blackrock Spire near the summit of the mountain. Upon his arrival at the Spire, he entered into an alliance with Rend Blackhand, delusional “leader” of the remaining orcs on Azeroth. Nefarian is locked in combat with the Dark Iron Dwarves and their fiery master, Ragnaros, for control of the mountain fortress. To facilitate his victory, Nefarian conducts vile experiments within the Spire, combining the essences of the five flights to create his Chromatic Dragonflight, a horrid nightmare of magic and genetics. His personal abode of Blackwing Lair sits atop Blackrock Mountain in the desolated Burning Steppes.

Nefarian assumes the guise of Lord Victor Nefarius, a human dignitary, to meddle in the affairs of humans, as most Black Dragons enjoy doing.

As a veteran of the Second War and a former prisoner of the Alliance internment camps, Naz’grel despises the Alliance, and humans in particular. He views Thrall’s continued insistence that the humans can be reasoned with to be a weakness, and feels that victory through war is the only way that the Alliance will end their persecution of the Horde. Naz’grel currently resides in Thrallmar in Hellfire Peninsula.

Naisha was a Night Elf Huntress who was Maiev Shadowsong’s lieutenant and second in command of the Watchers. She followed Maiev as they tracked down the Betrayer, Illidan Stormrage, and came across the Naga plundering villages in Azshara. They followed the Naga to the Port of Nendis and pursued them as they sailed east, eventually disembarking on the ruins of Suramar, an ancient Elven city that was buried under the waves when the Well of Eternity collapsed. The Watchers continued their chase and tracked Illidan down all the way to the Tomb of Sargeras, where Illidan was attempting to harness the powers of the Eye of Sargeras to destroy the Lich King. However, upon clashing with the Watchers, Illidan used the Eye’s power to collapse the entire tomb, aiding his escape and attempting to kill the elves. Maiev, with her blink ability, was the only survivor of the cave-in. Naisha, together with the rest of the expedition into the tomb, was buried alive.

World of Warcraft Muradin Bronzebeard

Muradin Bronzebeard was Prince Arthas’ dwarven friend and head of an archaeological expedition to Northrend. He was killed when Arthas claimed Frostmourne, shattering its case and causing an ice fragment to strike Muradin. Muradin was the younger brother of King Magni Bronzebeard, the supreme ruler of the dwarves, and older brother to Brann, a renowned dwarven explorer. Muradin was widely respected by Humans, Elves and especially the Dwarves and lived to the age of 221. Muradin was the former Ambassador of Khaz Modan and the head of The Dwarven Archeological Society. Muradin was a noble, yet ferocious warrior and respected all forms of good in the world. Muradin always relied on the Light and did what he believed to be right. He was a hero to all the mortal people of Azeroth. His dwarves, led by Baelgun, survived to fight Arthas in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, but were defeated.

World of Warcraft Highlord Mograine the Ashbringer

Mograine was a Commander in the Alliance army and a warrior or paladin in the service of the Silver Hand during the Second War. During the Battle of Blackrock Spire, he took a dark crystal from an orc spellcaster he slew; the evil energy was so powerful that it mangled his right hand. Locking it in a chest, Mograine revealed it to his friends Tirion Fordring, Abbendis, Isillien, Doan and Fairbanks during a meeting in Southshore, believing it could be used to combat the Scourge, whose intended invasion was nothing more than a rumor at that period. Though the others lashed out with holy energy to try to destroy it, the crystal absorbed the energy, changing its color and aura from an evil deep purple to a softly glowing reddish-orange. When Mograine touched the crystal, the holy energy healed his hand. This crystal became the basis for the creation of the Ashbringer – a powerful weapon to combat the undead. Mograine gave a portion of his soul to the creation of the blade, and thus he too was known as Ashbringer.

After the fall of Lordaeron, Mograine, Abbendis and Isillien founded the Scarlet Crusade, and many former paladins and soldiers of Lordaeron joined their order to combat the Scourge. Legend has it that the first suit of Dreadnaught’s Battlegear was created for him, giving him the appearance of a demon as he went into battle with the Scourge, Ashbringer held high, and leaving only the ashes of his enemies in his wake. This powerful weapon and the pious man who wielded it gained the attention of Kel’Thuzad, the lich overlord of the Plaguelands. Seeking to usurp Mograine, Grand Crusader Saiden Dathrohan struck a deal with Kel’Thuzad to kill the Highlord. Mograine was led into the ruins of Stratholme along with his chief advisor Fairbanks and his son Renault, where they were ambushed by a thousand Scourge. Mograine destroyed them all, but the battle left him weakened – enough for his son to pick up his father’s blade and run it through his heart. The blade and the wielder became corrupted, and enslaved to the will of Kel’Thuzad – trapped deep inside his vile fortress of Naxxramas.

Little is known about this Dreadlord, but what is certain is that he has a love for all things evil and wants nothing more than to tear the mortal world asunder. His name is probably an off shoot to Mephisto, one of the three demon brothers in the Diablo series or the famous Mephistopheles from Faust.

World of Warcraft Mekgineer Thermaplugg

The former chief Engineer of Gnomeregan, Sicco Thermaplugg was responsible for the fall of the Gnomish capital. It was Thermaplugg who suggested flooding the city with radiation in order to kill the invading Troggs. However, the radiation destroyed the city, killed most of the population and only served to strengthen the Troggs. Thermaplugg was apparently aware that this would happen, and engineered this event as a part of his plot to take control of the city.

Horribly mutated by the radiation and driven insane by powerlust, Thermaplugg now resides in the lowest levels of the irradiated city, ruling over it with an army of Leper Gnomes and machines.

Doomed literally from the moment of his conception, Medivh was the son of the powerful Aegwynn, who fought and defeated the Avatar of Sargeras, lord of the Burning Legion. Unbeknownst to her, Sargeras had infused a portion of his spirit within Aegwynn, which he then used to possess her unborn child.

The last of the long line of the Guardians of Tirisfal, sworn to defend Azeroth from the Burning Legion, he instead brought chaos under Sargeras’ influence, opening the Dark Portal and allowing the orcs to invade Azeroth. He was slain by his longtime friend, Anduin Lothar, and his apprentice, Khadgar, at the height of the First War. Redeemed to corporeal form by his mother Aegwynn, he is the person responsible for the two year alliance between humans and orcs. It is speculated that during Warcraft III he was in spirit form, however following the events in ‘Warcraft: The Last Guardian’ his mother used their spiritual bond to reincarnate him as a human once more.

In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Medivh will be featured as an NPC in the Caverns of Time, as he opens the Dark Portal. He also appears as a spirit in Karazhan on numerous occasions.

His name means ‘keeper of secrets’ in elven tongue.

Mannoroth (also known as “Mannoroth the Destructor”) was the leader of the Pit Lords and Archimonde’s second in command. When the Burning Legion first invaded the world of Azeroth, Mannoroth battled against the demigod Cenarius. It was he who originally corrupted the Orcs by making them drink his burning demon blood. This was called the Blood Pact. Mannoroth was killed by the Orcish chieftain Grom Hellscream. Hellscream sacrificed himself to slay Mannoroth in an effort to free the Warsong clan from the Blood Pact.

One of the five Dragon Aspects, he is the Hand of Magic and leader of the blue dragonflight. Once Neltharion the Earthwarder’s closest friend, he and his flight led the attack against Neltharion when the once-noble black dragon betrayed the other dragonflights. The power of Neltharion’s Demon Soul, however, completely decimated the blue dragonflight. The loss of his flight sent Malygos into despair and madness (hence his nickname, Mad Malygos), and he lost all interest in the rest of the world. Malygos would not recover his sanity for 10000 years, when he would assist the other Aspects in freeing Alexstrasza, the Aspect of Life, and regain his powers when the Demon Soul was destroyed. It was only through the actions of the dragon-mage Krasus that the blue dragonflight was able to slowly grow once more, for he had saved what few blue dragon eggs he could when the magic that had protected them from the cold failed due to Malygos’s neglect after he had gone mad. Resides somewhere in the icy wastes of Northrend with the rest of his brood.

Malfurion is a Night Elf Druid, also referred to as “Keeper of the Grove” in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. It is he who finally stops Archimonde’s attempt on the World Tree at Mt. Hyjal. A druid of great power, he is part of the faction which stood against Azshara and her Highborne magic practitioners and led to the destruction of the Well of Eternity. Before Tyrande Whisperwind awoke him using the Horn of Cenarius, he was fulfilling his oath to Ysera by walking the paths of the Emerald Dream. He is a disciple of the demigod Cenarius, and is the twin brother of Illidan Stormrage. He is responsible for having Illidan imprisoned after the creation of a second Well of Eternity at Mt. Hyjal and appointed Maiev Shadowsong the Warden personally to watch over Illidan. When the Burning Legion and Archimonde advance on Mt. Hyjal, he and Tyrande venture into the Barrow Dens to awake the Druids of the Claw and Druids of the Talon to help defend the Well of Eternity. Tyrande splits off from him in order to free Illidan. He is the lover of Tyrande Whisperwind after winning her heart after both him and Illidan sought it. This relationship is important because Illidan along with Malfurion saved Tyrande from the burning legion. He is also known as a “Shan’do” meaning the “Honored Teacher”. After saving Tyrande with Illidan’s help and settling matters with his brother, Malfurion is believed to have returned to Ashenvale to either continue undoing the damage of the Burning Legion or to rejoin the Emerald Dream.

Mal’Ganis was one of the Dreadlord sent by Tichondrius to transform humanity with the Plague of Undeath using infected grain. His servant Kel’Thuzad helped in spreading the plague, but was ultimately loyal to the Lich King. As the plague spread through the streets of Stratholme, Mal’Ganis faced and confronted Arthas but lost and fled to the icy continent of Northrend. Arthas followed him and fought through the Undead ranks with the help of Muradin Bronzebeard and his Dwarven Expeditionary Corps. Arthas then recovered Frostmourne in a bid to defeat the Scourge and Mal’Ganis. After recovering the accursed blade which killed Muradin when Arthas took it up, a mighty battle ensued and Arthas faced Mal’Ganis at his Black Citadel. Mal’Ganis was killed by Arthas, but Frostmourne transformed Arthas into a Death Knight and a servant of Ner’zhul, the Lich King.

He now rules over the city of Ironforge, and on most servers of World of Warcraft is the most difficult faction leader to kill because of the heavy population of Ironforge (due to its somewhat strategic location, with direct access to the Plaguelands and other points of interest).

Magatha Grimtotem is the leader of the mighty Grimtotem clan of the Tauren, and she is a powerful Shaman, being blessed with shamanic powers even as a girl. She is bestowed with the title of Elder Crone of the Grimtotem Clan, her position is equivalent to that of a clan chieftain, which is the fruition of a desire for power and prestige that was with her nearly her whole life. She came to power after she entered into an arranged marriage with the patriarch of the clan, which many can only suspect that she arranged herself, and lost her mate to an unforeseen climbing accident. Her clan believes that she will be the one to lead them in eradicating Kalimdor of the lesser races, and in retaking the Tauren’s ancestral holdings. She believes herself to be the only one fit to rule the Tauren, and constantly debates with Cairne Bloodhoof about the future direction of the Tauren.

The Grimtotems are all covered with black fur, and their clan can usually be seen as traitors to the Horde, attacking them on sight after having betrayed the Horde for their own interests, in the same manner as the Defias Brotherhood and the Burning Blade.

Lor’themar Theron is the Regent Lord of Quel’Thalas, leading the blood elves in the service of the Horde. Lor’themar was a member of Silvermoon’s Ranger Corps; it was during this period that he met Dar’Khan Drathir. Serving as second-in-command to Ranger-General Sylvanas Windrunner during the defense of Silvermoon, he became Ranger-General himself upon Sylvanas’ death. When Prince Kael’thas returned from Dalaran and proclaimed the rebirth of the high elves as the sin’dorei (blood elves), he named Lor’themar as Regent while Kael joined the Alliance resistance in Lordaeron. Lor’themar continued the battle against the Scourge in Quel’Thalas, and discovered the true identity of the human peasant girl held prisoner by Dar’Khan – she was the avatar of the Sunwell. He, and a select handful of others, have sworn to keep this secret.

Sometime after, Grand Magister Rommath – an emissary from Kael’thas – informed Lor’themar that the Prince had ordered Lor’themar to prepare the blood elf people for their journey to join him in Outland.

Kurdran Wildhammer is the brother of Wildhammer High Thane Falstad Dragonreaver, and rider of the gryphon Sky’ree. Kurdran was a renowned dragonslayer of the Wildhammer Clan, having killed nine dragons during the Second War. When Khadgar and Turalyon led the invasion of Draenor, Kurdran and Sky’ree joined them as scouts. They were believed to have been killed, along with the rest of the Expedition, when Draenor was destroyed.

However, they survived and reside in Shadowmoon Valley. Kurdran is the Thane of Wildhammer Stronghold, the Alliance’s primary outpost and gryphon breeding center. While Kurdran attends to Stronghold business, Sky’ree is tended by Eli Thunderstrike.

Korialstrasz is the Prime Consort of the Dragonqueen Alexstrasza, Aspect of the Red Dragonflight. He is also known by the aliases Krasus (his most common face, a member of the inner conclave of the Kirin Tor) and Borel (probably his identity among the Convocation of Silvermoon).

As Krasus, he discovered the true identity of Lord Daval Prestor, a young nobleman who sought the throne of the Kingdom of Alterac – the Black Scourge, Deathwing. He manipulated the human mage Rhonin into travelling into the orc-controlled stronghold of Grim Batol and free Alexstrasza from the powers of the Demon Soul, a foul artifact created by Deathwing ten thousand years earlier. After freeing Alexstrasza, Krasus resided with her for a time, bearing witness to the invasion of the Scourge, and its annihilation of Dalaran, Lordaeron and Quel’Thalas. Shortly after the invasion, he was contacted by Nozdormu, the Master of Time and Aspect of the Bronze Dragonflight, to investigate some sort of anomaly in Kalimdor, and he asked Rhonin to accompany him. Krasus, along with Rhonin and the orc Broxigar, was sent back ten thousand years to shortly before the War of the Ancients, meeting such historic and powerful figures as Cenarius, the Brothers Stormrage…and the past version of himself.

Upon returning to the normal time and discovering the remaining energies of the Sunwell of Quel’Thalas, Korialstrasz – this time known as Borel – formed the energies of the Sunwell into the form of a human girl named Anveena Teague, and created a life and family in the town of Tarren Mill. He revealed his illusion to Kalecgos and Tyrygosa, investigators sent by the Blue Aspect Malygos to investigate this mysterious energy, after Anveena unleashed the powers within her to obliterate Dar’Khan Drathir, the Traitor of Quel’Thalas. He promised that he would watch over her, to ensure that she remained safe and the power within her remained out of the hands of the Scourge. To date, that is the last anyone has heard of the Dragonqueen’s consort.

Korialstrasz does not appear in any form in World of Warcraft, but is mentioned several times in both the original game and the expansion, Burning Crusade. During the Scepter of the Shifting Sands event, one of the quest rewards is an epic dagger known as the Fang of Korialstrasz. In the Badlands south of Loch Modan, a high elf named Garek has been sent on a mission by Krasus to awaken and slay black drakes that reside in the area. In the village of Kirin’Var in Outland’s Netherstorm, adventurers are tasked with locating Krasus’ Sigil and the three parts of Krasus’ Compendium, presumably artifacts granted to the Dalaran contingent of the Alliance Expedition.

Kil’Jaeden is the leader of the Nathrizim, also known as Dreadlords. It is Kil’Jaeden who creates the Lich King by forming a dark pact with the Orc Warlock Ner’zhul and it is Kil’Jaeden who later appoints Illidan Stormrage the task of destroying the Lich King. An immensely powerful Eredar Warlock, Kil’Jaeden is responsible for commanding the Burning Legion from the Twisting Nether. While Archimonde is the leader of the invasion of the Burning Legion, It is believed that Kil’Jaeden is in fact more powerful than Archimonde and is second in power only to Sargeras himself. He is currently the master of Illidan Stormrage and after his initial appearance at Outland to confront his wayward pawn, his whereabouts are unknown.

Khanzo had headed up the Blackrock Scouts Division and was responsible for searching for human settlements to raid and making quick attacks on passing convoys of foolish wanderers.

Archmage who became Medivh’s apprentice, he discovered the taint of Sargeras in Medivh and killed him (banished his soul) to prevent further damage to others. Responsible for overseeing the Dark Portal that connected both the Human and Orc worlds, he tried to seal the portal.

In dwarven, his name means ‘trust’. Khadgar was trapped on Draenor when it exploded and the Dark Portal was sealed. He was subsequently presumed dead by the Alliance. With the recent re-opening of the Dark Portal, it was discovered that Khadgar had survived the war and was alive and well. In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Khadgar lives in Shattrath City, assisting the Naaru in their war against the Burning Legion.

“Khadgar’s Whisker” is a herb used in World of Warcraft to make potions.

A former mage and member of the Kirin Tor, he became obsessed with magic and necromancy until he joined the forces of the Lich King, Ner’zhul. He was responsible for spreading the plague that bolstered the ranks of The Scourge and by founding the Cult of the Damned. He was slain by Paladin Arthas Menethil, but was later resurrected by the Death Knight Arthas Menethil had become at the Sunwell in Quel’thalas. He is now even more powerful as a lich, and serves as Arthas’ lieutenant. When Arthas was summoned back to the Frozen Throne by the Lich King, Kel’Thuzad served as steward and watched over Lordaeron. He currently resides in the Naxxramas Necropolis above Stratholme where he conducts the Scourge throughout the Plaguelands. He is the final raid boss in Naxxramas Necropolis.

In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Kel’Thuzad appears again in his human form in the instance “Old Hillsbrad” within the instance hub “Caverns of Time”.

World of Warcraft Kargath Bladefist

Chieftain of the Shattered Hand Clan, loyal to Ner’zhul, and overseer of the lands of Draenor during the invasion of Azeroth. Kargath Bladefist was the one-eyed, scythed handed chieftain of the Shattered Hand Clan. Kargath and the Shattered Hand Clan served Ner’zhul and the Horde by staying behind on Draenor and watching over the land while the Orcs waged war upon the Humans on Azeroth. After the Bleeding Hollow Clan returned from Azeroth, Kargath volunteered his clan to go into battle against the Humans. After entering Azeroth, Kargath and his clan were stranded when the majority of the portals back to Draenor were destroyed. Since then, Kargath’s activities are unknown until the Dark Portal opened and he was found to be under demonic influence as the leader of the fel orcs. How he became re-enslaved is unknown, it is most likely to simply be a plot hole.

In World of Warcraft, Bladefist Bay off the coast of Durotar and the small outpost town of Kargath in the Badlands are named in honor of chieftain.
Kargath Bladefist appears in the instance of Hellfire Citadel as the leader of the fel orcs in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. He is the final boss of the last instance in Hellfire Citadel, called Shattered Halls.
There are 2 US servers named after Kargath (Kargath and Korgath) for World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft Jarod Shadowsong

Originally just a guard from the Night Elf city of Suramar, Jarod Shadowsong became the high commander of the combined Night Elf, Tauren, Earthen, Furbolg, and Demigod armies during the War of the Ancients after the death of the two previous commanders, Lord Ravencrest and Lord Stareye. Unlike Stareye, Jarod proved himself to be competent, and was instrumental in the eventual victory against the Burning Legion. He is the brother of Maiev Shadowsong.

World of Warcraft Illidan Stormrage

Brother of Malfurion Stormrage; Illidan became a transformed Demon Hunter after consuming the powers of the skull of Gul’dan. Illidan was defeated by Arthas while attempting to kill the Lich King in Northrend; although assumed dead, he was not actually slain. Twisted by his lust for arcane magic, he now commands a great army of Naga, Blood Elves, and Draenei from his encampment in Outland. He has also closed off all the local portals in an effort to protect himself from both the armies of Azeroth and the wrath of the Burning Legion (the latter of which he incurred after swearing himself to Kil’jaeden the Deceiver and then failing him in the line of duty). In spite of his efforts, Illidan was nonetheless hunted down by Kil’jaeden, who ultimately chose to give him a chance to redeem himself by killing the Lich King.

During the time of the War of the Ancients, Illidan’s lust for magical power and jealousy of his twin brother’s lover caused him to betray his Night Elf allies and befriend the Burning Legion. After the Night Elf victory, he was sentenced to an imprisonment that lasted 10,000 years, eventually being freed in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos by Tyrande Whisperwind.

In World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, Illidan is the final raid boss in Outland, residing in the Black Temple in the Shadowmoon Valley. He is currently the most powerful boss in World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft High Tinker Mekkatorque

Gelbin Mekkatorque is the current High Tinker (a title nearly equivalent to King) of the Gnomish kingdom of Gnomeregan, and has been for the last seven years. Mekkatorque is hailed as one of the most skilled inventors ever, and as a just leader. Unfortunately, when the Troggs invaded Gnomeregan, the High Tinker was ill-prepared for the attack. Misled by his traitorous advisor, Mekkgineer Sicco Thermaplugg, Gelbin flooded the city with radiation, killing more Gnomes than Troggs. Today, he resides in the Tinker Town district of Ironforge, and fronts the attempt to reclaim his lost city, sending brave adventurers into Gnomeregan (abbreviated by players as “Gnomer” or “Gnom”) to fight off the Troggs in a hope to perhaps one day reclaim his great city of Gnomeregan.

World of Warcraft Highlord Kruul

Highlord Kruul first appeared on the video game World of Warcraft, on January 9th 2007, after the patch. He is a commander of the Burning Legion, and he has found a way to come through the Dark Portal. He became a fightable monster in game, and he was almost an exact clone of Lord Kazzak. He even used “Mark of Kazzak” until they hotfixed it and it became “Mark of Kruul.” He looks exactly like Lord Kazzak, whose model is a giant Doom Guard. The week before Burning Crusade came out, he would appear in random areas accompanied by level 50 Core Hounds, and boss level Infernals. He would leave a wake of destruction wherever he went. Some players had a fun time luring him into major cities. There were reports of Kruul ravaging cities for over 5 hours at a time.

World of Warcraft Herod

The champion of the Scarlet Crusade, he now resides inside the Armory of the Scarlet Monastery. Becoming something of a cult figure due to his stylistic design, zealous demeanour and popular catchphrase “Blades of Light!”

Although Herod is technically the champion of the Scarlet Crusade, High Inquisitor Whitemane refers to Mograine as her champion – probably he is her personal champion/bodyguard.

You may find him in the Armory of the Scarlet Monastery in World of Warcraft. Herod, Whitemane, and Mograine are seen as children running around Southshore in the Caverns of Time/Escape from Durnholde instance.

A warlock who was attempting to transform himself into a lich. Unfortunately for him, his ritual in the Hillsbrad Foothills was discovered by a mob of humans, who killed him and buried him in the Southshore graveyard. The Forsaken at Tarren Mill became enraged by Helcular’s death and are attempting to revive him. In World of Warcraft, players on the Horde side have a quest available to them which, if completed successfully, results in “Helcular’s remains” animating and summoning skeletal allies. Originally, Helcular would often rampage through Southshore after being revived, but a later patch increased the levels of the town guards (for a reason unrelated to the quest), who now often make quick work of Helcular and, annoyingly, any Horde character that attempts to complete the quest owing to the proximity of the guards to the Graveyard. Many Horde players have died trying to get near the correct grave to complete the quest.

An important Tauren figure, but with a minimal role in Warcraft history so far. He is the Elder Druid of Thunder Bluff. He greatly supports Cairne Bloodhoof, and has known him since childhood. Hamuul met and befriended Malfurion Stormrage, who taught him the ways of the Druid. Since then, Hamuul became an honorary member of the Cenarion Circle (which was previously predominantly Night Elf), and as a result, he is recognized as the first Tauren Druid in a span of twenty generations, and teaches Druidism to those willing to become Druids. As a result of his teachings, the druid is a playable class for Tauren and Night Elves alike in World of Warcraft.

Halduron Brightwing is the current Ranger-General of Silvermoon, who served as Lor’themar Theron’s second-in-command. He is one of a handful of people privy to the true nature of the peasant girl Dar’Khan had held captive. When Lor’themar was named Regent of Quel’Thalas, Halduron was chosen to succeed him as Ranger-General.

World of Warcraft Hakkar the Soulflayer

Originally summoned millennia ago to strengthen and protect the Troll tribes of Stranglethorn Vale (The Gurubashi Empire), Hakkar often demanded daily sacrifices and worse to appease him. Eventually, a few tribes realized Hakkar was using them to regain his full power in this world in order to conquer it all, and rebelled against him and his followers. In the bloody battle that ensued, Hakkar was banished and the Troll tribes splintered. Hakkar’s followers were exiled from the tribes, but they did not stop in their quest to serve.

The exiles banded together to form a new tribe devoted to his service, they were known as the Hakkari, and they were determined to see Hakkar regain his full power. Eventually, Hakkar was again not pleased with simple blood sacrifices, and demanded to be summoned into the world. It was then when the Hakkari finally realised that Hakkar was evil. However, a fanatical faction of the Hakkari, known as the Atal’ai (his High Priests in fact), believed that Hakkar should be summoned.

The Hakkari called upon the most powerful and mysterious troll tribe, the Zandalar Tribe from the South Seas, and with them united to destroy the Atal’Ai. However, the remaining Atal’Ai trolls fled north into the Swamp of Sorrows erecting a temple to summon Hakkar, named the Temple of Atal’Hakkar. There, they once again attempted to summon the Blood God into Azeroth, but Ysera, ruler of the Green Dragonflight, felt Hakkar’s unnatural spirit from the Emerald Dream and smashed the temple beneath the marshlands of the Swamp of Sorrows. She left loyal members of her Flight to guard the ruins, under the command of a Green Dragon, Somnus. Now, the Hakkari are once again devoted to summon Hakkar after being subtly brainwashed by him and his High Priests from the Atal’ai. Hakkar the Soulflayer has now manifested himself in the Gurubashi ruins in northeastern Stranglethorn Vale known as Zul’Gurub. In response to this, the trolls of Stranglethorn sent their most powerful priests of the Five Aspects to vanquish him:

High Priestess Mar’li of the Spider God, Shadra.
High Priestess Jek’lik from the cult of Hir’reek the Bat God.
High Priest Venoxis of arlokk Snake God.
High Priestess Ar’lokk, a devotee of Beth’ekk the Panther God.
High Priest Thek’al of Shirvallah the Tiger God.
In World of Warcraft he is a boss in two instances, the first is the Temple of Atal’Hakkar where one of the bosses is an ethereal shade of Hakkar, however this incarnation is a pale comparison to the actual Hakkar in terms of power, the actual Hakkar with his true power is the final boss in the Zul’gurub raid instance.

This incarnation of Hakkar is unrelated to Hakkar the Houndmaster from Richard Knaak’s War of the Ancients novel series.

A rogue disciple of Hamuul Runetotem, Guthal is a lesser known character noted as the first Tauren druid to attain mastery over treants. Guthal carried a seething hatred for the night elves claiming them to be traitors to the ways of the druid by siding with the Alliance. Guthal is most famous for his campaign against the inhabitants of Ashenvale which climaxed with the battle of Astrynnar in which he is said to have been slain by Rene Wolfrunner, however Rene still remains ever vigilant awaiting his return.

World of Warcraft Gul’dan

Student of Ner’zhul, obsessed with power, Gul’dan was the Warlock contacted by Medivh to open new worlds for invasion. Using his warlock magics, he raised the Tomb of Sargeras from beneath its watery confines in hopes to seize the power of Sargeras himself by claiming the eye of Sargeras. In Warcraft III it is shown that his mission failed and he was killed alongside Cho’gall by the Demons defending Sargeras’ tomb. This however contradicts Warcraft II wherein Gul’Dan is slain by the player, and the Demons are enemies you have to fight through which work with Gul’Dan. In World of Warcraft The Burning Crusade it will be possible to encounter Gul’dan, or more accurately the spirit of Gul’dan in Shadowmoon Valley in Outland.

He was mortally wounded and died shortly after his victory, whispering to Thrall of his freedom. His real name is Grommash, and means ‘Heart of giant’ in Orcish tongue. Thrall’s seat of power in Durotar is named Grommash Hold in honor of his slain friend. his weapon is also an available drop in the raid instance Karazhan

World of Warcraft Garrosh Hellscream

Garrosh is the son of Grom Hellscream, and chieftain of the Mag’har, or “brown orcs” – the last uncorrupted orcish clan. Garrosh grew up knowing that his father had been responsible for the Red Pox, the demonic corruption that created the fel orcs and enslaved the Horde to the powerful Burning Legion. As a result, Garrosh has gone into a brooding depression and believes that his race – most especially his line – is cursed. As a result, he does not act decisively as he should against the forces who seek to destroy his people – the Burning Legion, the Illidari, and the ogres of Nagrand. His spirits are revitalized upon a visit from Thrall, the Warchief of the Horde and Grom’s best friend, who reveals that Grom died a hero against the evil Mannoroth.

It was announced at BlizzCon 2007 that Garrosh – now much more aggressive, but a little too much for Thrall’s liking…much like Grom himself – will lead the Horde expedition to the Borean Tundra in western Northrend, and will set up the fortress of Warsong Hold. His forces – and thus the Horde – have allied themselves with the shamanistic tuskarr native to the area, and aid them in battle against the naga invaders.
